About the event

Day 1 (November 23) : LES 100 Licensing Course

Abstract

The seminar will provide a comprehensive, professional set of tools and techniques to help IP stakeholders to profit from their IP and to put it at the heart of their business strategy in a way that is easy to access and implement.

The sessions are designed to help those who are new to the area of IP licensing and to get an understanding of the basics. The sessions will discuss the details of licensing arrangements, including the process of how to determine the value of consideration for the exploitation of the intellectual property right. Pointers on how to limit the disclosure of information surrounding the IP and to protect trade secrets will also be explained. The participants will also hear from copyright licensing experts on how they were able to earn from the exploitation of rights of different creators.

The highlight of the seminar is a workshop, which is aimed to build a practical understanding of the core IP and licensing concepts, including commercialization and valuation. It will involve an open exchange of views among IP owners, professionals, practitioners, and other stakeholders through group discussion and licensing case studies.

Day 3 (November 25): LES Young Members Congress Asia Pacific Conference

  • Session 1: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Licensing Profession

In this session, we will ask our panelists about their views, opinions and experiences relating to inclusion of women and gender, ethnic, and other minorities in one of the least diverse professions - the licensing profession. We will ask our panel about the challenges they face specific to their gender, ethnicity, or being part of the minority, how we should measure diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in organizations, and the concrete actions organizations should take as advocates of DEI.

  • Session 2: The Role of IP and Licensing in Achieving Food Security

Food security is one of the UN sustainable development goals greatly impacted by technology. We will learn from the different stakeholders and partners in the food value chain about their experience in protecting and licensing their core technologies and issues surrounding compulsory licensing in achieving food security.

  • Session 3: Challenges in the Valuation and Licensing of Traditional Knowledge

For the final panel session, our panel will discuss the challenges in estimating the value of indigenous or traditional knowledge, specifically issues in coming up with a methodology that will fully capture the value of traditional knowledge from a cultural heritage perspective. The panel will also discuss how to ensure that the terms in the licensing agreement of traditional knowledge protects the interest of the indigenous community and respects the cultural value of the licensed IP.
